Japan Visas

Foreigners wishing to take up a residence in Japan, should obtain a "Status of Residence and Period of Stay". Status of residence and period of stay are determined when a foreigner enters Japan with a proper visa and is then included in the entry permit stamped on the passport.

In total there are 27 categories of status of residence (Visa Status). In case of temporary visitor status each foreigner will be granted a period stay of 15 days or 90 days.

In case of Diplomat and Official status the period of stay will be "during mission". In case of other status the period of stay will be 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, a designated period or indefinite.

Foreigners cannot engage in any activities not permitted under their status of residence.

When a foreigner ( except temporary visitors status ) wishes to engage in an activity not permitted under his or her status of residence or wants to extend the period of stay, he or she must obtain necessary permission from the Immigration Bureau in Japan.

To obtain a proper visa necessary procedures has to be completed in Japan / foreign (home) country. Except Temporary Visitor (Tourist or short-term business visits), Diplomat & Official status it is recommended to obtain "Certificate of Eligibility"(COE) from the Immigration authority in Japan.

Upcoming Changes and for latest information!

Extension of maximum duration of visa!
The maximum duration for visas will be extended from three to five years.

Re-entry permits will no longer require for short visits abroad!
Foreign residents will no longer be required to obtain a re-entry permit for trips abroad, unless they will be away for over a year.

Alien Registration Cards!
The current alien registration card (gaikokujin toroku shomeisho) will be replaced with a Residence (zairyu) Card imbedded with an IC chip. All foreigners legally residing in Japan for more than three months will be required to hold a Residence Card and carry it with them at all times. Currently, local authorities issue alien registration cards to illegal residents, but under the new system only legal residents will be able to obtain a Residence Card. Holders of the new cards will be registered in the Basic Resident Register and the IC chip enables the central government to uniformly monitor their whereabouts and potentially pickup infringements such as failing to report an address change.

The Residence Cards will be issued to eligible foreigners newly entering Japan when they pass through Immigration on arrival. Those already resident in Japan will be required to apply for the card at their local authority.
